Paws on Board: Dogs Steal the Show at Surfing Championship in California
In Pacifica, California, a remarkable event celebrated the bond between dogs and their owners at the Annual World Dog Surfing Championship. On a sunny Saturday, Charlie, a 10-year-old yellow Labrador, was among 15 to 20 dogs showcasing their surfing skills along the beautiful coastline south of San Francisco.
These furry participants eagerly jumped onto their boards, with some even joining their humans in tandem rides. The competition attracted thousands of spectators who cheered on the diverse canine competitors, including Labradors, terriers, and spaniels, all donned in colorful, monogrammed life jackets.
Judges evaluated the dogs based on their ability to balance on the boards, the duration of their rides, and any tricks they performed, such as stylish turns. Charlie, who has gained a bit of fame with his own Instagram page, drew attention as he participated in the extra-large individual surfing series and joined two other dogs for a tandem round, dubbed “The Dream Team” by their handlers.
“Charlie loves the crowd,” said his owner, Maria Nieboer. In hushed tones, she describes how she and her husband, Jeff, prepare Charlie for each wave. When Jeff spots a good wave, he gives Charlie the cue to get ready, pushing the board forward as Charlie expertly rides the wave for as long as he can. His skill even allows him to direct the board toward Maria waiting on the shore.
The joy Charlie experiences while surfing is evident. “He does what he wants when we’re in the water,” Jeff noted, emphasizing the playful spirit of their surfing sessions.
Winners of the competition were awarded medals and the bragging rights that come with being recognized in this fun event.
Joining Charlie in the competition was another Labrador named Rosie, who surfed in four different series. Her owner, Steve Drottar, shared that Rosie gets particularly excited after a surfing session, as they practice four to five times a week at home in Santa Cruz. “It’s a team effort that brings us closer,” Drottar explained, reflecting on the unique bond developed through their shared experiences. He observed that Rosie seems especially happy, wagging her tail more vigorously and curling up next to him with a sense of contentment after their time on the waves.
As the day ended, the joy of both the dogs and their owners was evident—a heartfelt reminder of the special connections we share with our pets.
