The quiet roads just south of Murray, Iowa, turned tragic on Wednesday evening when 16-year-old Elmer Borntrager was fatally injured in a hit-and-run collision while riding a horse-drawn buggy. What should have been a peaceful journey home for the longtime Amish community member instead became a heartbreaking loss for his family, friends and neighbors.
According to the Clarke County Sheriff’s Office, the crash occurred shortly before 6 p.m., when a motor vehicle struck the buggy from behind on County Road R-15, just south of Forest Street. The impact threw Elmer from the buggy, and despite efforts by first responders, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators believe the fleeing vehicle is a silver or gray GM or Chevrolet sedan with heavy damage to the front right side and possible windshield or roof damage. The sheriff’s office is urging anyone with information to call 641-342-2914.
Elmer, described by those who knew him as a gentle, hardworking young man of strong faith, was a valued member of the local Amish-settlement community. In a culture where horse-drawn buggies are part of daily life, his routine ride turned into tragedy. Friends recall his humility, his dedication to family and tradition—and the promise his future once held.
In an environment defined by simplicity and connection—buggy travel, community support and shared values—his sudden absence is felt profoundly. The Amish community near Murray, known for its resilience, is now leaning on collective faith and mutual comfort in the face of an unimaginable loss.
This incident doesn’t only strike at one family; it echoes across a community that holds its traditions and youth dear. The nature of the crash—an unknown driver fleeing after colliding with a youth in a buggy—adds layers of grief, indignation and longing for justice.
As vigils are planned and meals shared in the days ahead, the community will remember Elmer not only for how he died but for how he lived: with kindness, earnestness and quiet purpose. And while his absence leaves a void, the memories and spirit he leaves behind may just become the lasting legacy of his 16 years.
May his family find comfort in their faith, and may the wider community honor the young life lost by renewing its commitment to care, vigilance and shared humanity.
