On July 21, 2025, a carefree walk for 13-year-old De’Siyah Reed in the 1900 block of Padgett Road in Austell, Georgia turned into a nightmare when gunfire erupted around him. He was caught in the crossfire of what prosecutors now lay out as a gang confrontation, and a single shot to the head ended his young life.
Today, the Chris Carr’s office announced that two 14-year-old boys, Jonathan Camphore and Josiyah Cole—both living in Austell—have been indicted on multiple charges in connection with this tragedy. Investigators trace the violence to an escalating feud between two gangs: Camphore is tied to the Cobb-County based street gang known as Young Stupid Reckless (YSR), while Cole is allegedly affiliated with the notorious Sex Money Murder (SMM), a faction of the Bloods.
Prosecutors say the bullets flew not randomly, but as part of a targeted attack linked to the feud. Camphore faces charges including multiple violations of Georgia’s Street Gang Terrorism & Prevention Act, voluntary manslaughter, aggravated assault, possession of a handgun by a minor, and a firearm used during the commission of a felony. Cole’s indictments mirror that severity: gang-terrorism counts, manslaughter, aggravated assault, first-degree criminal damage to property, firearm possession during a felony, and handgun possession by a minor.
According to court documents, Reed had been walking with his aunt in the early evening when the shooting broke out nearby. He was struck in the head and, despite efforts, did not survive. Authorities say this young life was snuffed out by violence that never should have touched him.
Attorney General Carr, speaking on the case, said: “This is a tragedy that should have never occurred… we’re dedicating all available resources to protecting our children from senseless violence.” The gravity of the moment was echoed by James Ferrell, interim Chief of the Cobb County Police Department, who described Reed’s death as a “painful reminder of the impact gang violence has on our community.”
To combat these kinds of shootings, in 2022 Carr established Georgia’s first-ever statewide Gang Prosecution Unit. That team has been active in prosecuted gang-related cases in Cobb, DeKalb and Fulton counties, securing more than 115 convictions statewide. As of now, the indictments are fresh, the names of the defendants are public, and the investigation remains active.
For the family of De’Siyah Reed, for the friends and classmates of the two 14-year-olds, and for the wider Austell community, this case is both a wake-up call and a call to action. The violence reached beyond gang members—it claimed a child. The hope now is that through accountability, prevention, and community outreach, no other parent has to receive a knock at the door bearing devastating news like this.
