Bicycling from St. Nikolaus to Santa’s Village
In a heartwarming initiative, three postal workers have embarked on a journey from St. Nikolaus, Germany, to Rovaniemi, Finland—a distance of nearly 3,000 kilometers (1,860 miles). The goal of their trek is to deliver letters and children’s Christmas wish lists addressed to Santa Claus.
St. Nikolaus himself, dressed in his festive attire, was present to send the letters off on this exciting two-week adventure. The cyclists will travel through Germany, Denmark, and Sweden on their way to the renowned Santa Claus Village, located right on the Arctic Circle.
This effort is part of the volunteer work done by Deutsche Post, which responds to over 30,000 letters from children around the globe every year, all sent to the dedicated St. Nikolaus post office. This special post office has its own postal code, underscoring the town’s commitment to spreading Christmas cheer.
The tradition of replying to these letters dates back to 1967 and is marked by unique stamps that add a special touch to each response. Interestingly, St. Nikolaus is one of seven places in Germany that carry a Christmas-themed name, all of which receive letters for Santa.
This year, along with the letters from children, St. Nikolaus also shared his own wish list with the cyclists, hoping for a reply from Santa Claus in Finland. The celebration of these holiday traditions reminds us of the joys of giving and the magic of Christmas.
