CHARLOTTE (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A parachutist has been charged after becoming stuck on an Uptown apartment building in the middle of the night, according to Charlotte Fire.
Just after 1 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 18, firefighters were called to the 500 block of South Church Street after hearing of a person stuck on the outside of a highrise.
After some searching, crews found a parachutist stuck 100 feet in the air and hanging from a tangled parachute stuck on the facade of the Museum Towers apartment building.
Firefighters worked to quickly create a high-angle rope system to secure and get to the man. At 1:28 a.m., a firefighter reached the parachutist, and at 1:43 a.m. he was brought to the rooftop uninjured.
The parachutist, Adam Diego of Mint Hill, has been arrested and charged with trespassing.
“Our firefighters train for these challenging rescues, and their professionalism was on full display last night,” said Charlotte Fire Chief Reginald Johnson. “This situation could have ended much differently, but thanks to their skill and teamwork, the individual was safely brought to safety.”
Diego did not say where he jumped from or how he got stuck. Charlotte Fire stressed that unauthorized parachuting or BASE jumping in urban areas is very dangerous and requires complex emergency responses.
