Trump-Backed Matt Van Epps Wins GOP Primary in Tennessee’s 7th District Special Election

Matt Van Epps, a former commissioner of the Tennessee Department of General Services, triumphed in Tennessee’s 7th Congressional District Republican special election primary on Tuesday, bolstered by former President Donald Trump’s endorsement. Van Epps will now face off in the general election on December 2 to fill the seat vacated by former Rep. Mark Green.

    What Happened

In a crowded field of 11 Republican candidates, Van Epps emerged victorious, with Trump’s endorsement playing a pivotal role in shaping the outcome. Despite early voting having already taken place, Trump’s backing influenced the remaining race, prompting his rival, Lee Reeves, to suspend his campaign and throw his support behind Van Epps. Trump lauded Van Epps for his wisdom and courage in defending the country and supporting military veterans.

Van Epps, a lieutenant colonel in the Tennessee Army National Guard and former Army helicopter pilot, was also backed by former Rep. Mark Green, Governor Bill Lee, and Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH). The district, which spans central and western Tennessee, is a stronghold for the GOP, with Trump having carried it by 20 points in the 2020 presidential election.

A Test of Loyalty and Influence

The Republican primary in Tennessee’s 7th District became a test of loyalty to Donald Trump. The race included prominent GOP figures such as state Reps. Jody Barrett, Gino Bulso, and Lee Reeves. Barrett had support from the House Freedom Caucus and conservative groups but could not overcome Van Epps’ backing from Trump and other prominent Republicans. Trump’s endorsement was particularly influential, even after early voting had concluded.

    The Road Ahead

Van Epps now heads into the Dec. 2 general election as the favorite in a district where Republicans have strong political dominance. The seat was vacated by Mark Green, who resigned earlier this year to pursue a private sector job. The special election results could have significant implications for the broader balance of power in the U.S. House, where Republicans currently hold a narrow majority of 219-213.

    Closing Line:

Matt Van Epps’ victory in Tennessee’s 7th District Republican primary underscores the influence of Donald Trump in shaping GOP races, with the general election on December 2 marking the next key chapter in this high-stakes contest.
