William “Wing” Munro, a cherished member of the Thurso and Kirkwall communities, has passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 11, 2025, at Wick General Hospital. Wing, a dedicated lifesaver and mentor, leaves behind a remarkable legacy of service, courage, and inspiration that will continue to guide the RNLI family for many years.

    What Happened

Wing Munro’s journey with the RNLI began at the age of 16 in January 1970, when he first joined the organization. Over 55 years, Wing rose through the ranks, becoming Thurso’s full-time coxswain in 2002, a role he held until his retirement in November 2017. His leadership and steady presence aboard the lifeboat earned him the admiration and respect of his crew, as well as the gratitude of the countless lives he helped save during his career.

Among Wing’s most notable achievements was his role in the dramatic rescue of the scallop boat Aztec in Loch Eriboll in 1997, a mission that earned him the prestigious Thanks of the Institution on Vellum. Additionally, in 1999, he received a bronze certificate for his heroic efforts during the aftermath of the Ascania multi-tank incident.

    Reactions

Even after stepping down as coxswain, Wing continued to serve the RNLI as Deputy Launching Authority (LOM), using his wealth of knowledge and experience to mentor new crew members. His lifelong dedication to the RNLI and the safety of others was celebrated during King Charles III’s recent visit to Scrabster, where His Majesty presented Wing’s daughter, Dee, with The King’s Coronation Medal on his behalf — a fitting tribute to his decades of service.

Wing’s passing has left a profound impact on the RNLI family and the wider maritime community. The RNLI flag at Thurso now flies at half-mast in honor of this true legend, and tributes have poured in from colleagues, friends, and the many lives he touched throughout his career.

    What’s Next

Wing’s legacy as a mentor, leader, and selfless lifesaver will continue to inspire future generations of RNLI crew members. His devotion to the organization and the values of courage, compassion, and community service will forever remain a cornerstone of the RNLI family.

    Closing Line

This is a developing story. We will update this article as more information becomes available. Wing Munro’s memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him, and his service to others will remain a guiding light for many years to come.
