Woman Critically Wounded in West Side Chicago Shooting; Police Seek Public’s Help

43-year-old woman lies in critical condition after being shot multiple times near Garfield and State on Chicago’s West Side early Saturday morning. According to the Chicago Police Department (CPD), the woman was struck in the head, shoulder and lower body, and was rushed to hospital where she remains under intensive care. No arrests have been made, and investigators are appealing to the public for any information that may lead to the shooter’s arrest.

The incident unfolded near the intersection of Garfield Boulevard and State Street. Neighbors say they heard several gunshots just before 1 a.m., then saw the victim on the sidewalk calling for help. First responders arrived shortly thereafter and found her badly injured. She was transported to a nearby trauma center in critical condition. As of now, the police have not released the woman’s identity or any additional details about what led up to the attack.

Detectives say they are treating the case as an attempted murder and Area Four detectives are leading the investigation. They have asked anyone with video footage from their doorbells, dashcams or mobile phones, or who witnessed suspicious activity in the blocks around Garfield and State Street early Saturday, to come forward. The CPD stresses that even small bits of information—like a vehicle description or direction of travel—could be valuable in identifying suspects.

Friends and family members of the victim described her as someone who was strong, kind and deeply connected in her neighborhood. “She’s always been there for others,” said a longtime friend who asked not to be named. The shooting has shaken the local community, with residents on edge and demanding more visible patrols and accountability. “It’s scary that this happened on a seemingly quiet street,” one resident said.

Law enforcement officials note that Chicago has experienced a surge in gun violence this year, particularly in West-and South-side neighborhoods. They point out that the complexity of these cases—multiple victims, chaotic scenes, scant cooperation—makes resolving them difficult without public help. In this case, the early hour and urban setting make identifying witnesses challenging, and investigators are urging anyone with information to call the CPD tip line or submit anonymously through Crime Stoppers.

As the victim fights for her life, community members have rallied in prayer and support. A vigil is being planned for later this week to honour her spirit and to call on the city to act. Many are also hoping the attention this case brings will spur more efforts to prevent violence and support affected families.

At this time, the CPD has released no further details about possible suspects, motive or whether additional shooting victims were involved. No arrests have been made and police stress that the investigation remains very much active. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Chicago Police Department or leave a tip via Crime Stoppers immediately. Four your thoughts and prayers for the woman and her loved ones.
