Chipley, Florida — The Chipley community is mourning the loss of one of its most cherished and long-standing residents, Dorothy Louise Young, who passed away peacefully on August 11, 2025, at the age of 102. Surrounded by love and remembered for a life marked by dedication, kindness, and unwavering faith, Dorothy’s passing marks the end of a remarkable century-long journey.

Dorothy was born on April 23, 1923, in Savannah, Georgia, to the late Charles and Ethel (Stanford) Grant. Growing up in a close-knit family, she learned early the values of hard work, humility, and compassion — traits that would define her life. She later moved to Florida, where she built a home filled with love and laughter alongside her husband, Ira David Young, with whom she shared many decades until his passing.

A dedicated worker, Dorothy spent many years employed at Piggly Wiggly, where she was known not just for her reliability, but also for her warm smile and caring interactions with customers and colleagues. Beyond her professional life, Dorothy was a devoted member of the Church of Christ, finding great joy and purpose in her faith and her church community. Her life was guided by a strong spiritual foundation, and she touched countless lives through acts of kindness and generosity.

In addition to her parents, Dorothy was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Ira David Young; brothers Charles Grant, Donald Grant, Bobby Grant, Billy Grant, O’Neal Grant; and sisters Martha Jean Grant Copeland and Virginia Grant Polhill.

She leaves behind a loving family who will forever cherish her memory: her son David Young and his wife Sally of Niceville, Florida; her daughter Cindy Pettis of Bonifay, Florida; grandchildren Richard Young and wife Tara of St. Augustine, Florida, Brittany Justice and husband Jeremy of Bonifay, Florida, and Cody G. Pettis of Chipley, Florida. Her legacy also continues through her great-grandchildren Cash Young, Morgan Ashcraft, Dylan Justice, Keegan Justice, Raelyn Justice, and Finn Justice. Dorothy is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and two beloved sisters-in-law.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, August 16, 2025, at Brown Funeral Home Chapel in Chipley, with Bro. Edward Prescott officiating. Interment will follow at Glenwood Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to gather for a visitation one hour prior to the service to share memories and pay their respects.

The Young family has expressed deep gratitude for the compassionate care provided by the staff of the 3rd Floor Skilled Nursing Unit at Northwest Florida Community Hospital. Their professionalism, kindness, and dedication brought comfort during Dorothy’s final days.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Northwest Florida Community Hospital 3rd Floor Skilled Nursing Unit, 1360 Brickyard Road, Chipley, FL 32428, in honor of Dorothy’s memory and in appreciation of the care she received.

Dorothy Louise Young’s life was a testament to love, service, and resilience. She will be deeply missed, yet fondly remembered by all whose lives she touched over her extraordinary 102 years.
