Captain Steve Henderson, a highly respected veteran of South Carolina law enforcement, tragically lost his life earlier this week in a motorcycle crash on Highway 183.

    What Happened

According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, Henderson was traveling north on his motorcycle when he crossed the centerline and collided head-on with an SUV. He was wearing a helmet at the time but died at the scene from multiple blunt force injuries. The driver of the SUV was injured and transported to a hospital for treatment.

    Who Was Captain Steve Henderson

Captain Henderson dedicated more than 19 years of service to the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office, where he most recently served as Uniform Patrol Captain. Over the years, he made significant contributions in multiple roles, including as a handler and later Lieutenant in the K-9 Unit, and as an operator on the SWAT Team. His career was marked by bravery and leadership, earning him the Medal of Valor, multiple Deputy of the Quarter awards, and recognition as K-9 Handler of the Year for five consecutive years.

Before his law enforcement career, Henderson also served his country in the United States Air Force from 1994 to 1998.

    Community and Department Reaction

The Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office released a statement calling Henderson’s passing a “tremendous loss” to both the department and the wider community. Colleagues remember him as a leader, mentor, and devoted public servant who inspired those around him with his dedication and professionalism.

    What Happens Next

As the community mourns, tributes continue to pour in honoring Captain Henderson’s legacy of service and sacrifice. Details about memorial services and ways to support his family are expected to be announced in the coming days.
