Box Office Report: “Weapons” Dominates the Charts

LOS ANGELES — The horror film “Weapons” has taken the box office by storm, securing the top spot in its first two weekends, outperforming competitors like “Freakier Friday” and new release “Nobody 2.”

In its debut, “Weapons” raked in $25 million across 3,450 theaters in North America. While this represents a 43% decline from its opening weekend, the film’s strong word-of-mouth and social media buzz have helped it maintain audience interest.

“Freakier Friday,” which also premiered during the same weekend, held its ground at second place, grossing $14.5 million domestically. Box office expert Paul Dergarabedian noted that both films fared well during a quieter weekend at theaters.

In contrast, the action sequel “Nobody 2,” led by Bob Odenkirk, opened with $9.25 million in its debut across 3,260 theaters.

Dergarabedian mentioned that comparing this summer’s box office to last year is challenging, given the notable successes of films like “Deadpool” and “Wolverine,” which released around the same time.

Despite concerns that this summer might not hit the $4 billion benchmark, it has brought a wide array of films to moviegoers, catering to different tastes and demographics.

In “Nobody 2,” Odenkirk reprises his role as Hutch Mansell. This time, Mansell takes a family vacation that takes an unexpected turn as he uncovers corruption in a seemingly quiet town. Universal Pictures is optimistic about the film’s audience response, which currently includes an 89% Audience score and a B+ CinemaScore.

Meanwhile, “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” came in fourth place during its fourth weekend, bringing in $8.8 million. The film has seen a decline from its initial strong showing of $118 million.

Another sequel, “The Bad Guys 2,” rounded out the top five, earning $7.5 million in its third weekend.

Interestingly, international films made a splash in this weekend’s top 15. The Indian action thriller “Coolie” debuted in the 10th spot, with another Indian flick, “War 2,” following closely behind at 11th. The re-release of the Japanese film “Shin Godzilla,” originally premiered in 2016, saw a notable return as it landed in 12th place.
