John Stamos Looks for Grittier Roles While Cherishing His ‘Full House’ Legacy

John Stamos, beloved for his role as Uncle Jesse on “Full House,” is ready to explore darker and more complex characters as he embarks on new acting projects. The 62-year-old actor expressed a desire for roles that feel more authentic. In a recent interview, he stated, “I just want to play a little more real. I’m looking for my ‘Breaking Bad.’”

Stamos acknowledges that he is best known as the charming Jesse Katsopolis, who captured the hearts of viewers with his Elvis-loving persona. However, he has learned to appreciate this iconic role as he takes on more diverse parts. “The more I get roles that are unlike the sitcom, the more I embrace what ‘Full House’ was,” he shared. “People can call me Uncle Jesse all day long. I love it now.”

His latest project, a horror film titled “Drag,” sees him stepping into the shoes of a serial killer—one of his darkest roles to date. Additionally, he will appear in the second season of Kristin Wiig’s comedy series “Palm Royale,” taking on the role of a lawyer/gynecologist.

Stamos remarked on his continued ability to work alongside some of Hollywood’s finest, saying, “To be able to still be considered good enough to work with some of the greats—just to be in a scene with these people—that means a lot.” He reflected on how fatherhood has deepened his appreciation for “Full House,” acknowledging that the show’s themes resonate more deeply as he raises his son, Billy.

He believes that the positive messages in “Full House” are needed now more than ever. “With discord at an all-time high, and decency at an all-time low, people need good entertainment,” he noted. “They need positivity and optimism.”

Stamos became a father in 2018 and often jokes about his parenting experiences. He humorously recounted a time when he mistakenly gave his son anti-itch cream instead of toothpaste, adding, “We try as parents.” To connect with Billy, who enjoys superhero content, Stamos has taken on voice acting roles in shows like “Mickey Mouse Funhouse.”

His journey towards sobriety has also played a pivotal role in his personal life, with Stamos crediting it for the positive changes in his life—including his marriage to Caitlin McHugh. “I stopped drinking 10 years ago. That’s why I’m alive,” he stated. He believes that being a good husband and father has kept him grounded and youthful.

Stamos’s humility shines through as he remains grateful for his career and the love of his family. As he recently celebrated his 62nd birthday, he reflected on the important things in life—laughter, love, and gratitude—making it clear that he doesn’t take a single moment for granted.

Through it all, from his cherished past to an exciting future, John Stamos continues to make a mark in Hollywood while holding dear the legacy of Uncle Jesse.
