A man is charged with murder after he allegedly fatally shot a woman in Center City on Friday evening, Philadelphia police said.
The alleged shooter, identified by police as John Kelly, was arrested Friday and charged with murder, possessing an instrument of crime and other related offenses, according to police.
Shortly after 5:45 p.m. on Friday, police responded to the 1200 block of Chesnut Street in Center City for reports of a person with a gun. Officers arrived at the area and found a woman had been shot multiple times.
The woman, whose name was not immediately provided by police, was taken to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, where she later died.
Police took Kelly into custody near the scene and brought him to the hospital for treatment. Investigators said another person was also brought to the Philadelphia Police Department’s Homicide Unit after they allegedly grabbed the gun used in the shooting.
CBS News Philadelphia spoke with a witness who said he saw the entire ordeal Friday.
“She came up to him, pulled out a gun. She was waving it around,” said witness Simon Bradstreet. “And then he grabbed the gun from her, kicked her on the ground, shot her in the back and then shot her hand, I guess to not let her grab the gun again. He tried to run, and then there were four cops on the corner of 13th and Chestnut. They tackled him and then arrested him.”
