Today, we honor the memory of Linda Gronlund, a beloved daughter, sister, aunt, and friend who tragically lost her life aboard United Flight 93 on September 11, 2001. Born and raised in Sag Harbor, Long Island, Linda would have turned 71 years old today. Her life was one of achievement, courage, and compassion—qualities that continue to inspire all who remember her.

    Who Was Linda Gronlund?

Linda Gronlund was both an attorney and an engineer, serving as manager of environmental compliance for BMW cars. Her passion for automobiles began at a young age when she worked on cars with her father. This early love grew into a lifelong enthusiasm for cars and car racing, pursuits that connected her to a wide network of friends and colleagues.

Her career reflected her determination to excel in fields often dominated by men. She was deeply respected for her expertise, professionalism, and pioneering spirit. Beyond her career, Linda also dedicated herself to service and personal growth. She was a certified EMT, committed to helping others, and she earned a brown belt in karate, a testament to her discipline and strength.

A Life of Strength, Love, and Joy

Linda was described as caring, determined, and full of energy. In the months leading up to September 11, she found happiness in a new chapter of her life. She began seeing Joe DeLuca, a fellow car enthusiast she knew from sports car racing clubs. Both had been married previously, but together they discovered joy and companionship.

On the morning of September 11, 2001, Linda and Joe boarded Flight 93 en route to California wine country to celebrate her birthday. They also planned to visit one of the few Morgan car dealers in the U.S.—a fitting trip for someone with such a deep love of automobiles.

During the hijacking of Flight 93, Linda called her sister to say she loved her and even gave her the combination to her safe where her will was kept. Her calmness, love, and clarity in those final moments remain a powerful reminder of her courage.

    Remembering Her Legacy

Linda’s family remembers her as a “great blessing.” Her mother, Doris, spoke of the joy and inspiration Linda brought to those around her. Friends and colleagues admired her brilliance, kindness, and adventurous spirit.

Today, as we reflect on what would have been her 71st birthday, we celebrate Linda’s life and the remarkable woman she was:

    • A trailblazer in her professional career.

    • A dedicated community member through her EMT service.

    • A caring and courageous sister, daughter, and friend.

    • And above all, a hero whose life and sacrifice will never be forgotten.

The memory of Linda Gronlund continues to shine brightly through the lives she touched. On her birthday, we honor not only the tragedy of her loss but also the strength, excellence, and compassion that defined her.

Happy Birthday, Linda. We remember you.
