The Binghamton community is mourning the loss of Ron McKan, a devoted educator, coach, and mentor whose life’s work was rooted in service to others. Ron, who passed away recently under undisclosed circumstances, leaves behind an enduring legacy of kindness, leadership, and empowerment.

Ron dedicated much of his career to the Binghamton City School District, where he was more than a teacher—he was a mentor, role model, and guiding presence for both students and staff. Known for his patience, humor, and energy, he created classrooms and teams where young people felt seen, heard, and encouraged to reach their full potential. For new educators, especially teachers of color, he stood as a symbol of representation and unwavering support.

Beyond the school district, Ron’s impact began with the youngest learners as a toddler physical education coach at the Family Enrichment Network. His joyful approach and genuine care gave children not just skills, but confidence and laughter. Parents recall his encouragement as foundational in their children’s earliest years.

A proud graduate of Binghamton High School, Binghamton University, and the University at Albany, Ron never strayed far from his roots. He lived out his values as a devoted husband, family man, and friend, always pouring love and energy into his community.

Those who knew him describe Ron as a leader with a big heart—someone who believed deeply in others and had a gift for bringing out the best in everyone around him. His legacy will continue to echo in the classrooms he taught, the teams he coached, and the countless lives he touched.

Ron McKan will be remembered for his laughter, his mentorship, and the unwavering belief that every child, every colleague, and every person deserved a champion in their corner.
