CONEJOS COUNTY, Colo. — Two out-of-state elk hunters who were reported missing near the New Mexico border have been found dead, officials confirmed Thursday. The discovery comes after several days of search efforts in the San Juan Wilderness area.

    What Happened

Andrew Porter, 25, of Asheville, North Carolina, and Ian Stasko, 25, of Salt Lake City, Utah, were reported overdue while elk hunting west of Trujillo Meadows Reservoir. The Conejos County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) responded Saturday to the Rio De Los Pinos Trailhead after the men failed to check in with loved ones at a prearranged time.

Search and rescue teams located the men’s vehicle, which contained camping gear and backpacks, raising concerns due to heavy rain and hazardous conditions in the area. Multiple agencies, including air operations, ground teams, drone teams, and local volunteers, were deployed to search for the hunters.

Around 11 a.m. Thursday, CCSO confirmed the bodies of two men were recovered approximately two miles from the trailhead. Their identities will be officially released after confirmation and notification of next of kin.

Who Were Andrew Porter and Ian Stasko

Andrew Porter and Ian Stasko were both 25 years old and passionate about outdoor adventures. Porter hailed from Asheville, North Carolina, and Stasko was from Salt Lake City, Utah. Their friends and families expressed deep concern when they failed to respond to messages after last Thursday evening.

    Background

The hunters were in the San Juan Wilderness area, known for its challenging terrain and unpredictable weather. Officials emphasized the dangers of backcountry hunting, especially during periods of heavy rain.

    Public and Social Media Reactions

Family and friends took to social media to share concern over the missing hunters. Bridget Murphy, Porter’s fiancée, wrote on Facebook about the lack of contact, urging anyone with information to assist authorities. Community members and fellow outdoor enthusiasts expressed grief and support for the families.

Official Statements and What Happens Next

The Conejos County Sheriff’s Office is conducting further investigations and will release the identities of the hunters once next of kin are notified. CCSO praised the collaborative efforts of multi-county search teams, volunteers, and specialized units that assisted in the recovery.
