SILVER CITY, N.M. (KRQE) — The family of actress Nichelle Nichols, best known for her iconic role as Lieutenant Uhura in the original Star Trek series, has filed a lawsuit against a New Mexico hospital following her death in 2022. The family claims that Gila Regional Medical Center in Silver City failed to provide proper care, leading to Nichols’ untimely passing at the age of 89.

    What Happened

Nichols, who was staying at Millie’s Assisted Living near her son Kyle in Silver City, experienced episodes of shortness of breath. She was admitted to the emergency department of Gila Regional Medical Center, where her attorney, Lisa Curtis, says she should have received a full cardiac workup. However, Nichols was instead placed in an observation unit and discharged the next day in worsened condition.

Just hours after her discharge, Nichols passed away at Millie’s Assisted Living. Curtis, who represents the family, alleges that the hospital’s decision to reduce staff and cut corners contributed to the inadequate care Nichols received. “Our evidence shows they were cutting corners and reducing staff at huge levels. And that meant that patients weren’t getting the care that they needed,” Curtis stated.

    The Family’s Response

Kyle Nichols, the actress’s son, filed the lawsuit with the intention of preventing similar incidents from occurring in his community. Curtis added that Kyle was deeply upset by the way his mother’s life was cut short and wanted to ensure she received the natural death she deserved.

    Legal Proceedings

In response to the lawsuit, the attorney representing Gila Regional Medical Center denied all allegations. The case has expanded to include a lawsuit against HealthTech Management Services as well. A trial date has been scheduled for June 3.

    Conclusion

As the lawsuit moves forward, the Nichols family is seeking justice for the loss of a beloved cultural figure, while also drawing attention to the systemic issues they believe contributed to her death. KRQE reached out to Gila Regional Medical Center for comment but has not yet received a response.
