Chamblee, GA — Benjamin Martin, a 15-year-old from Chamblee, Georgia, became an unlikely hero during the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. While many were preparing for the storm, Benji was already at the controls of his HAM radio, volunteering through the ARES emergency frequency from his bedroom.

    What Happened

As Hurricane Helene barreled toward the Southeast, Benji was ready to assist. Taking his volunteer position seriously, he quickly activated his HAM radio and started communicating with others in need of help. He was part of a community of amateur radio operators who were vital in assisting during the storm, ensuring communication lines stayed open when traditional methods failed.

He recalled the urgency, saying, “They were setting up the day before, schools were closing, and we thought, Atlanta is going to take a full-out hit.” His mom, Julianne, wasn’t surprised by his dedication. “We contacted his school and said, ‘Hey, my kid is probably, at the age of 15, going to be activated,’” she said.

    Benji’s Heroic Actions

Benji worked through the night, using his radio to help people connect with resources and locate loved ones. One of his key contributions was helping locate a medically fragile woman who had gone missing after the storm. His role was critical, and he took it to heart. As he told his mom, “My job is to make sure that whoever is on the other end has someone who can hear them, so they know they’re going to get the help they need.”

    The Community Behind Benji

For Benji, the HAM radio community has been more than just a way to assist others; it’s become a support system. “The community, even if I’m going through a really bad day, they’re always there to help,” he said. “We always stick by each other’s side.” Alongside him in his journey is his furry co-pilot, a bunny named Buns, who often keeps him company during his broadcasts.

    What Happens Next

Now 16, Benji is starting a HAM Radio Club at his school, hoping to inspire other kids to get involved. His selfless service during Hurricane Helene earned him a commendation, acknowledging his contribution during the crisis. He remains passionate about helping others during times of need, a sentiment he expressed, saying, “We all have times when we need help and are at our lowest, and being able to help someone there, there’s something about it that just feels right.”

Benji’s actions demonstrate that even in the most challenging situations, every person, no matter their age, has the power to make a difference.
