Actress Alex Kingston, best known for her roles in ER and Doctor Who, has opened up about being diagnosed with womb cancer last year. The 62-year-old star, who is currently competing on Strictly Come Dancing, underwent a hysterectomy and radiation therapy, completing her treatment late in 2024. Kingston’s candid revelation sheds light on her health journey and her decision to embrace life more fully after facing a challenging diagnosis.
What Happened
In an interview with The Independent, Kingston shared that she had been experiencing symptoms such as bloating and aches for some time, which she initially attributed to aging. “I thought, ‘OK, this is what it’s like to be in my sixties,’” she explained. However, it was when she noticed blood in her urine that she sought medical help, which led to her cancer diagnosis.
“I never went down the cancer road in my head,” Kingston admitted. “It was a shock, because I have a very positive outlook on life in general. Even though my body was telling me there was something very seriously wrong, I kept thinking, ‘Oh, I’ve got a bad UTI or fibroids.’”
After undergoing medical tests, she was diagnosed with cancer in her fallopian tubes, though it had not spread to the ovaries. Her diagnosis was followed by a hysterectomy and radiation therapy, both of which dominated her 2024. “I had a major operation,” Kingston said. “I had to have a hysterectomy, I had to go into radiation therapy, and that took up a huge part of my life.”
A Life-Changing Experience
Kingston also recalled a terrifying incident when she suffered a hemorrhage while on stage during her performance at the Chichester Festival Theatre in April and May 2024. The experience was “shocking” and prompted her to seek medical attention. “The minute I had the operation, I suddenly felt like myself again,” she said, reflecting on the relief she felt post-surgery.
Kingston emphasized the importance of not ignoring signs of illness and encouraged women to have regular check-ups if something feels wrong. “Life is too short,” she said, explaining how her battle with cancer motivated her to embrace opportunities she had previously hesitated to pursue.
Life After Treatment and Strictly Come Dancing
Now in remission, Kingston is focusing on her current project, where she is competing on Strictly Come Dancing with professional dancer Johannes Radebe. The actress, who topped the leaderboard with her samba last week, revealed that her cancer experience inspired her to take part in the show. “Life is too short not to take opportunities you want,” she said, reflecting on her decision to say yes to the dancing competition.
Kingston’s journey not only highlights her resilience but also serves as an inspiration to others, reminding everyone to prioritize their health and seize opportunities for joy and growth.
