Knox County, Tenn. — Deputy Dalton Swanger, critically injured during a June episode of “On Patrol Live” while responding to a suspect, is now facing serious complications from his hospitalization. According to his girlfriend, Stephania Pumphrey, Swanger is suffering from tracheal stenosis, a potentially fatal condition resulting from his time on a ventilator while in a coma.

What Happened: Deputy Swanger’s Attack and Hospitalization

On June 22, 2025, Deputy Dalton Swanger was struck in the head by a large rock or brick while responding to reports of gunshots near Stanley Road in Knox County. The assault left Swanger critically injured, and he was rushed to the University of Tennessee Medical Center, where he spent several days in a coma.

During his time in the coma, Swanger was placed on a ventilator, which caused complications. His girlfriend, Stephania Pumphrey, revealed that the forceful intubation or the breathing tube led to the development of tracheal stenosis, a narrowing of the trachea. Initially, the narrowing was measured at 8 mm, half of the normal width of 16-18 mm, and despite three unsuccessful surgeries to dilate the airway, the condition has worsened, leaving his trachea under 6 mm wide.

    What is Tracheal Stenosis?

Tracheal stenosis is a condition where the trachea becomes narrowed, restricting airflow. In Swanger’s case, the narrowing is located just two centimeters below his vocal cords, making it especially difficult to treat. Pumphrey emphasized that the condition can be fatal if left untreated, and it is progressing rapidly. Swanger’s next option is a tracheal resection, a complex surgery that involves cutting out the narrowed section of his trachea and stitching the remaining parts together.

The Urgent Search for Specialized Treatment

The couple is currently seeking a hospital with the necessary expertise to perform the life-saving surgery. Pumphrey explained that only a few hospitals in the country have the specialized teams required for the procedure, known as Complex Airway Teams. The couple has been in contact with these hospitals but has yet to secure an appointment.

“The narrowing is about two cm below his vocal cords, which makes it especially complex and difficult to treat,” Pumphrey said. “We need urgent help. This surgery is crucial for saving Dalton’s life.”

    Public Support and Continued Prayers

The Knox County Sheriff’s Office has also called on the public for continued prayers and support. “While we respect the privacy of Deputy Swanger and his healing journey, we also recognize the power of prayer,” said department spokeswoman Kimberly Glenn. “We will continue to share updates on Deputy Swanger’s recovery as they become available, and we are grateful for the incredible support from this community.”

Sheriff Tom Spangler and Chief Deputy Bernie Lyon have expressed their gratitude to the community for their unwavering support during this challenging time.

    The Suspect: Christopher Michael Hensley

The suspect accused of assaulting Deputy Swanger, Christopher Michael Hensley, remains in the Knox County Jail. He faces several charges, including attempted second-degree murder, aggravated assault on a first responder, domestic assault, possession of a firearm with intent to go armed, and various drug-related offenses.

    Closing Line:
