Kylee Marie Monteiro, an 18-year-old woman from Rhode Island, was brutally murdered by her abusive boyfriend, Gregory Groom, in August 2025. Just before her death, Kylee sent a chilling message to her sister, warning that her abuser would be the one to end her life. This case highlights the deadly consequences of domestic abuse and the need for greater support for victims.

What Happened: The Final, Heartbreaking Message

Kylee Marie Monteiro, a young woman with a bright future, was born on November 4, 2006, in Providence, Rhode Island. She was the youngest of four siblings and had faced her share of challenges, especially after the death of her mother in 2019. In March 2025, she began a relationship with Gregory Groom, a 22-year-old man from Rehoboth, Massachusetts. The relationship quickly became tumultuous, with Gregory known to be physically abusive toward Kylee.

Despite the abuse, Kylee moved in with Gregory and became pregnant with his child in June 2025. Her family was supportive and hopeful for her future, but the abuse escalated. Kylee had even stayed in a domestic violence shelter for a short time in the past.

On the night of August 6, 2025, Kylee went to Gregory’s home and asked to stay the night. The situation quickly turned violent. Gregory pushed her, causing her to fall and hit her head. When Kylee tried to reach for her phone, he knocked it from her hand. In a desperate bid for help, she texted her sister one last message:

“He threw me to the ground, pulled my hair, and choked me. My phone battery is at 4%, and if I die, it’s Greg.”

That was the last her family ever heard from her.

The Murder: A Life Taken Too Soon

After the text, Gregory escalated his attack. He stabbed Kylee twice in the neck and once in the chest. He then spent hours digging a shallow grave before discarding her body in it, around 5:43 a.m. The 18-year-old, 11 weeks pregnant with Gregory’s child, was taken from the world far too soon.

Gregory Groom was arrested on August 19, 2025, and charged with Kylee’s murder. He pleaded not guilty to the charges. The heartbreaking reality of this case is that Kylee had been trying to escape her abuser and had sought help. Tragically, for many victims of abuse, it can take several attempts to leave an abusive partner, and for some, it costs them their lives.

The Importance of Support: The Danger of Domestic Violence

This case serves as a grim reminder of the risks faced by individuals trapped in abusive relationships. Domestic violence remains a leading cause of death for pregnant women in America, and victims often lack the resources and support needed to leave safely. The average victim of domestic violence makes seven attempts to leave their abuser before succeeding, but not all of them survive.

Kylee’s tragic death underscores the urgent need for stronger support systems for victims, as well as awareness about the deadly cycle of abuse.

    Closing Line

Kylee’s story is a heartbreaking reminder that abuse is never acceptable, and that victims need support, not judgment. Let her memory inspire us to be more vigilant, more supportive, and more determined to protect those at risk.
