A quiet October dawn in Summerville turned tragic when 25-year-old Milly Asencio was struck and killed while walking along Jedburg Road in Berkeley County. The collision, which took place in the early hours of Friday, October 17, 2025, left the community reeling and searching for answers.

According to the Berkeley County Coroner’s Office, Asencio was identified as the pedestrian fatally hit in the crash. State troopers say the accident occurred around 2:37 a.m., roughly three miles west of Summerville along Jedburg Road. Officials report that she was walking east along the westbound side of the road when she was struck by a Jeep traveling west.

Responders from Pineridge Fire & Rescue, the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office, and Berkeley County EMS rushed to the scene, but tragically, Asencio was pronounced dead at the site. The Jeep driver was uninjured and remained on scene, fully cooperating with authorities.

Investigators have noted that the vehicle involved was a 2018 Jeep Wrangler. The driver was alone in the car and reportedly sustained no injuries. The crash forced a closure of the roadway for nearly two hours as first responders and troopers processed the scene and gathered evidence.

As of now, law enforcement has not released any conclusive findings about contributing factors—whether speed, impaired visibility, road conditions, or other elements played a role remains under review. The Berkeley County Coroner’s Office and the South Carolina Highway Patrol continue their joint investigation.

This heartbreaking incident has stirred sorrow across the community. In the hush after such tragedies, people pause to grieve and also to reflect: how safe are the roads we walk at night? Community members are especially troubled by the notion of a young life lost far too soon, and the many questions that such loss leaves unanswered.

Authorities are asking anyone who may have seen the collision, or who knew Milly’s movements before that early hour, to step forward. Tips and information can prove vital in uncovering how this happened—and helping ensure better safety for those who walk the roads after dark.
