Melville, N.Y. — Just after 1 a.m. Saturday, silence shattered along Bagatelle Road when 28-year-old Joseph “Joe” Melendez, riding his electric bicycle home, was struck down by a car. The driver, identified as 37-year-old Jennifer Kirkpatrick of Melville, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. Melendez was rushed to a nearby hospital but succumbed to his injuries. Kirkpatrick sustained minor injuries and now faces serious charges.

The crash happened at the intersection of Bagatelle Road and Express Drive South, according to Suffolk County Police. Witnesses say the vehicle came out of nowhere, striking Melendez nearly head on. He was reportedly wearing a helmet and bike gear, doing what many do every night—trying to get home safely. First responders arrived quickly, but despite their efforts, the damage was irreversible.

In the aftermath, Kirkpatrick was treated at the hospital and later booked into custody for driving while intoxicated. Police say she’s cooperating with investigators as the full sequence of events is pieced together. They’re examining factors like speed, lighting, road conditions, and whether there was impairment beyond just alcohol.

Melendez’s friends and family remember him as more than a name in a police log. He was someone who lit up rooms with his sense of humor, was loyal to those he loved, and took pride in his work — qualities that now spark heartbreak and disbelief among those who knew him best. “He never hurt a soul,” a close friend shared, struggling to make sense of the tragedy.

This terrible crash has reignited long-standing worries in the community about impaired driving. It’s a warning: the decision to get behind the wheel while intoxicated doesn’t just risk your life, but the lives of everyone around you—especially those vulnerable like cyclists and pedestrians.

Every investigation detail still matters — police are going over every camera, traffic light, and skid mark to understand exactly what went wrong that night. But some things are already clear: a young man is gone, a driver must answer for her actions, and a close-knit community has been torn open by grief. Let Joe’s loss press upon all of us the weight of responsibility we carry when we drive.

May Joseph Melendez rest in peace, and may his loved ones find strength in the days ahead.
