Trump Urges Senate to End Filibuster, Reopen Government

Washington D.C. – Former President Donald Trump is calling on the Senate to eliminate the filibuster, a move he believes would allow the Republican majority to swiftly overcome Democratic obstruction and restore full government operations.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated that the choice is clear: use the “nuclear option” to remove the filibuster. This parliamentary procedure requires 60 votes to end debate on most legislation, allowing a minority of senators to delay or block a vote. With a 53-seat majority, Republicans currently rely on some level of Democratic cooperation to pass legislation.

Trump emphasized the importance of efficient governance, particularly in light of concerns raised during his recent trip to Asia. He pointed out that foreign leaders questioned him about why Republicans allow Democrats to shut down parts of the government.

The former President’s remarks come as some senators and House Speaker Mike Johnson are seeking ways to end the current government shutdown. It remains to be seen whether lawmakers will heed Trump’s call or continue to seek bipartisan solutions through negotiation.

The shutdown has raised concern for some Americans. The White House has prioritized funding for the military, emphasizing national security.
Some Republicans argue that the shutdown highlights the need for fiscal responsibility and a reduction in wasteful spending. House Speaker Mike Johnson has criticized what he sees as able-bodied citizens misusing public assistance programs. He and other Republicans have stated that the new work requirements for the aid programs would weed out what they called “waste, fraud and abuse.”
