Anthony Hopkins, the celebrated actor, has been reflecting on his journey with sobriety and his personal well-being. In a recent interview, the 87-year-old actor spoke candidly about his past struggles and the insights he’s gained along the way.

Hopkins shared that he considered the possibility that some of his own mental struggles might have been inherited from his father, who also battled with alcohol. He mentioned that the renowned actor Laurence Olivier once suggested he seek therapy. Hopkins did see a therapist briefly, but he found the process unengaging and decided it wasn’t for him.

Interestingly, Hopkins’ wife, Stella Arroyave, has suggested that he might be on the autism spectrum. Hopkins acknowledges that he is detail-oriented and likes order, but he’s hesitant to embrace labels like Asperger’s. He views such labels with a degree of skepticism, suggesting they might be an oversimplification of the human experience.

Hopkins is approaching his 50th year of sobriety. He recalls a pivotal moment while driving under the influence, when he realized the potential harm he could cause to others. This realization led him to seek help and ultimately embrace a life of sobriety through a 12-step program. He credits a profound sense of clarity and purpose for his ability to overcome his alcohol addiction. Hopkins emphasizes the importance of a higher power or inner strength in his recovery.
