Small-Town Shock: Beloved Karlstad Resident, 57, Found Shot After Panicked 911 Call

It was shortly after 1 a.m. on Saturday when the tranquility of Karlstad, Minnesota — a close-knit town where most doors stayed unlocked — was violently interrupted. According to authorities with the Kittson County Sheriff’s Office, a 911 call came in from a house along State Highway 11: the homeowner reported an unknown intruder had entered, assaulted him, and taken his firearm. A moment later, dispatchers heard a gunshot — and then silence.

When deputies arrived on the scene, they found the homeowner, 57-year-old Kevin Jon Sele of Karlstad, dead — a weapon lying near his body. His identity was released by Sheriff Matt Vig on Monday, and authorities say the cause and manner of death remain under investigation.

Local residents say Kevin, often known by his nickname “Beef,” was a fixture in the community — friendly, outgoing, someone who would stop and talk with anyone. “He got the nickname Beef for a reason — he used to play football, he’s a big guy,” one neighbor recalled. For a town of just 700 or so people, his loss has shaken the foundations of a once-peaceful place. “Peaceful little town — this doesn’t happen in Karlstad. Now it did,” one longtime resident said.

Investigators stressed that, based on what they know so far, there is no indication of a continuing threat to public safety. Still, they acknowledged the extraordinary circumstances — the 911 call, the gunshot heard by dispatch, and the subsequent finding — demand time and careful work. “Our job is to ensure that every ‘i’ is dotted and every ‘t’ is crossed,” Chief Deputy Dave Thompson told the public. “Without doing so, there’s a risk of releasing misleading information and that is simply not acceptable.”

Kevin’s body was transferred to the University of North Dakota Forensic Pathology unit for autopsy and further testing. Investigators have not released a timeline for when they’ll reveal the cause and manner of death, citing the complexity of the case and the delicate nature of the work ahead.

For the people of Karlstad, the events serve as a stark reminder that even in the most close-knit places, tragedy can intrude. “Haven’t locked my door in 50 years — that night we did,” another local resident said, reflecting the shift in the town’s sense of security.

As the investigation continues, the Sheriff’s Office and community leaders are asking for patience and understanding. Updates will come as reliable facts are confirmed, rather than speculation. Meanwhile, neighbors keep remembering Kevin — as someone who helped, who greeted you, who was part of the fabric of this town — and mourn the sudden loss of his presence among them.
