A quick trip for sneakers turned into a nightmare for 19-year-old Suniya Jenkins inside the children’s section of a sneaker store. The incident occurred on the evening of Wednesday, November 5 at Kids Footlocker in Southland Mall, Taylor, Michigan, when things spiraled out of control after a woman ahead of her in line had her payment declined.

According to investigators, a 40-year-old woman in line got upset when her credit card was declined. As she argued with store staff, the report says the woman behind her—allegedly Suniya—made a remark about her being “broke.” That comment reportedly triggered the escalation. But Suniya says she never made the comment: she says she was simply walking by when the commotion began.

What followed was swift and violent. The suspect allegedly pulled a kitchen knife and stabbed Jenkins four times—twice in the neck, once in the stomach and once in the thigh. Jenkins says she only realized what happened after the fact, and was left with a punctured lung among her injuries.

From her hospital bed, Suniya shared her shock and pain: “To start, I was stabbed four times and I have a punctured lung right now,” she told reporters. “I think it was unfair to me to get stabbed, but that’s really all I can say.” Despite the physical and emotional trauma, she said she plans to press charges—but added that she’s troubled by the idea of the suspect being separated from her children. “It does sadden me because I don’t want her to be taken away from her children, I truly don’t,” she said.

Law-enforcement sources say the 40-year-old suspect was arrested at the mall shortly after the incident and remains in police custody. Investigators are still working to sort out the exact motive, what was said in that line and whether the comment about “broke” triggered the attack or simply helped fuel it.

For its part, Kids Footlocker and Southland Mall are cooperating with the investigation. Employees and security footage are expected to provide additional clarity on how a shopping-line dispute escalated into a stabbing, and how bystanders like Jenkins became caught in the crossfire.

As Jenkins recovers, the surreal nature of what she described remains: a routine visit to the store, a random remark she denies making, and suddenly fighting for her life. Her story stands as a stark reminder of how quickly everyday interactions can spiral, and how important it is to remain calm—even when tempers flare.

If you were in the store or witnessed the incident on Wednesday night and have relevant information, the Taylor police department is asking for your help. Jenkins says she hopes to one day put the incident behind her and return to normal life—but in the meantime, she’s focused on healing, processing what happened, and making sure something like this never happens to anyone else.
