But at around 3 p.m. this Thursday, tragedy struck: 42-year-old Rusty A. Donovan, a long-time employee at the store, was shot and killed inside the location at 1914 Swift Street in North Kansas City.
According to the North Kansas City Police Department, officers responded to reports of gunfire in the store and quickly arrived at the scene, where they found Donovan suffering from gunshot wounds and then pronounced him dead at the scene. Shortly thereafter, a suspect was taken into custody without incident, and police emphasized that there was no ongoing threat to the community.
Investigators described the incident as “isolated,” with no other employees or customers hurt in the shooting. Officers and forensic specialists spent hours at the store: crime-scene tape was in place, shell casings and surveillance footage were being collected, and detectives were canvassing the area for witness statements. The Clay County Prosecutor’s Office and police are working together to review evidence and determine appropriate charges. While the suspect remains in custody, specific details — including identity and motive — are still under investigation.
