Gastonia, N.C. | November 9, 2025-A tragic multi-vehicle crash in Gastonia, North Carolina, on Sunday night resulted in the death of Janice Lopez, 53, and left four others hospitalized, including a 19-year-old man with serious injuries. The accident occurred around 7:05 p.m. at the intersection of Gaston Day School Road and Hoffman Road, prompting immediate response from the Gastonia Police and Fire Departments.

    What Happened

The incident unfolded when a 19-year-old man from Gastonia was driving a black Cadillac sedan southbound on Gaston Day School Road at a high speed. According to police reports, he lost control of the vehicle, veered into the opposing traffic lane, and collided head-on with an Uber vehicle.

The Uber driver, Janice Lopez, from South Carolina, tragically lost her life at the scene. Lopez, a 53-year-old woman, was providing a rideshare service when the crash occurred. The backseat passenger, also a woman, sustained critical injuries.

The collision triggered a chain reaction, involving two other vehicles. Both of these drivers were also seriously injured, and the Gastonia Fire Department had to extricate two people who were trapped in their vehicles.

    Investigation and Charges

Toxicology results are pending, and the investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing. At this time, no charges have been filed, but authorities are continuing to assess all factors that may have contributed to the incident.

The 19-year-old driver of the Cadillac was taken to the hospital with serious injuries, but his condition has not been released. His high speed at the time of the crash and the severity of the resulting collision are central to the ongoing investigation.

    Public Reactions and Tributes

The Gastonia Police Department issued a statement expressing their condolences: “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of Janice Lopez,” the department wrote. The tragic incident has left the community in shock, and tributes have begun to pour in on social media, with many expressing their sorrow for Lopez’s untimely death and wishing the injured a speedy recovery.

    What Happens Next

As the investigation continues, authorities are focusing on whether speed, distracted driving, or other factors played a role in the fatal crash. The community remains on edge as they await updates on the condition of the injured individuals and further details on the investigation.

The Gastonia Police are urging anyone with additional information about the incident to come forward, as they work to determine the full circumstances surrounding this heartbreaking accident.
