An early‐morning outing ended in tragedy Wednesday for 82-year-old Darell Groves, a long-time and well-liked member of the Seminole neighborhood. He was killed when his electric bicycle collided with a turning pickup at the intersection of Seminole Boulevard and Valencia Terrace.

According to the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office, the crash occurred at about 9:21 a.m. on November 12 when 62-year-old John Baustert was driving a 2012 Toyota Tacoma eastbound on Valencia Terrace and attempted to turn south onto Seminole Boulevard. At the same time, Groves was riding his electric bike northbound in the southbound-marked bicycle lane of Seminole Boulevard. The truck made its turn and struck Groves in the intersection.

First responders rushed Groves to a nearby hospital, but sadly he was later pronounced deceased. Baustert, uninjured, remained at the scene and cooperated fully with investigators. Investigators say that neither impairment nor speed appear to have played a role in the crash.

One detail the Sheriff’s Office noted: Groves was not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision. While investigators added that it may not have altered the outcome here, they reiterated the importance of safety gear for cyclists — especially when sharing road space with turning vehicles.

Friends and neighbors in the Seminole community are grappling with the loss of someone described as kind, active and present—a fixture of local life who saw riding his e-bike as both independence and enjoyment. His death has prompted reflections on how quickly a typical morning ride can turn tragic when cyclists and vehicles converge at an intersection.

The crash also serves as a stark reminder of how vulnerable even cautious road users can be when turning movements, lane markings, and traffic flow create risks. Authorities with the Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) are reviewing witness statements, traffic-signal timing, roadway and vehicle positions, and any available surveillance footage as they piece together every detail.

Beyond the investigation, the community has rallied online and in person, sharing condolences with Groves’s family and using the moment to talk about road-safety habits. The Sheriff’s Office is asking anyone who witnessed the collision or captured video in the area to contact them to support the ongoing inquiry.

As the sun rose over Seminole that morning, an everyday ride turned into a loss that will be felt for years. In remembering a man who simply wanted to get out and enjoy his day, the community also honors the message that every ride, every turn, every intersection matters.
