LANCASTER COUNTY, NE — A heartbreaking collision on Wednesday afternoon claimed the lives of Patrick and Penny Holley, a beloved couple from Firth, Nebraska. The tragic accident occurred around 4:07 p.m. on November 12, 2025, on Highway 77, near Firth Road, about two miles north of Cortland.

What Happened: A Fatal Crash on Highway 77

The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office (LSO) confirmed that the collision involved a 2007 Buick Lucerne, driven by 63-year-old Patrick Holley, and a northbound 1993 Ford F-250 pickup truck, driven by 43-year-old Joseph Grant from Lincoln.

According to investigators, the Holleys’ vehicle was traveling west on Firth Road when it entered the intersection with Highway 77 and collided with Grant’s pickup truck. The force of the crash sent the Buick into an adjacent ditch, while the Ford F-250 came to a stop in the median of the highway.

Despite rapid responses from emergency services, including Hallam Fire & Rescue, Firth Fire & Rescue, Cortland Fire & Rescue, Lincoln Fire & Rescue, and StarCare Air Ambulance, Patrick Holley was declared dead at the scene. His wife, Penny Holley, was transported to the hospital but tragically passed away from her injuries later that day.

Joseph Grant was taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and no other vehicles or individuals were involved in the crash.

Who Were Patrick and Penny Holley?

Patrick and Penny Holley were well-known figures in the Firth community, where they had lived for many years. Described by neighbors as generous, compassionate, and devoted to their family and community, the couple’s sudden loss has left a significant void.

Patrick was known for his hardworking nature and involvement in local activities, while Penny was remembered for her warmth and kindness. The couple’s deep love for each other was evident to all who knew them, making their loss even more tragic.

They will be remembered not only for their contributions to the community but also for the positive, supportive relationships they maintained with everyone around them.

The Ongoing Investigation: Authorities Seek Answers

The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office has launched a thorough investigation into the cause of the accident. Deputies closed the intersection for several hours to ensure a comprehensive examination of the crash site. Early reports indicate that alcohol or drugs were not factors in the incident. Authorities are still investigating whether seat belts were used at the time of the crash, as part of the ongoing inquiry into the circumstances that led to this devastating accident.

Captain John A. Vik of the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office expressed deep sympathy for the Holley family and the Firth community, saying, “Patrick and Penny had been long-time residents, and their absence will be profoundly felt by all who knew them.”

    Community Reactions: A Community Mourns

Friends, family, and residents of the small town of Firth have expressed their heartbreak over the unexpected loss of the Holleys. Many took to social media to share their fond memories of the couple, recalling the love and kindness they always shared with others.

“Patrick and Penny were always there to lend a hand or offer a kind word,” a neighbor shared. “Their loss is devastating, and it’s hard to imagine Firth without them.”

The community has come together to support the Holley family, offering condolences and helping the family navigate this difficult time.

What Happens Next: Remembering a Legacy of Love

As the investigation continues, authorities remain committed to understanding the factors that led to this tragedy. In the meantime, the Firth community stands united in honoring the memory of Patrick and Penny Holley, whose lives and legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew them.

The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office has vowed to provide further updates as the investigation progresses. Meanwhile, the Holley family continues to mourn the loss of two cherished members of their family, and the entire town of Firth will remember the couple for their kindness, generosity, and love for one another.
