On a Thursday evening just after 5:20 p.m., the quiet of late afternoon in the town of Cicero turned tragic when 67-year-old David S. Cook of Syracuse lost his life in a single-vehicle rollover crash. According to the New York State Police, Cook was driving a 2011 Chevrolet Express van southbound on New York State Route 481 when he attempted to take Exit 10 toward Bear Road.

As Trooper Jennifer Jiron explained, Cook’s van drifted off the eastern shoulder of the ramp, rolled over and ended up on its passenger side in a nearby ditch. He was pronounced dead at the scene. No other vehicles were reported involved, and no injuries to other parties were noted.

The stretch of Route 481 near Bear Road has been the site of several serious crashes over the years—making this one yet another reminder of how quickly a routine driving maneuver can turn fatal. Emergency responders found the scene chaotic, the van badly overturned, and the ramp littered with debris. Investigations are ongoing into whether speed, weather or mechanical failure played any role.

Friends and neighbors describe Cook as a soft-spoken longtime resident of Syracuse who loved spending time with his family and tinkering with older vehicles. His death has hit the local community hard: one neighbor said, “He was always checking in on everyone, and now we’re left with a shock that one evening drive became his last.”

While the State Police continue to piece together precisely what caused the van to leave the roadway and overturn, officials urge motorists on the ramp to Bear Road and other similar exits to use caution, avoid abrupt steering or overcorrection, and be especially vigilant as daylight fades.

In the days ahead, Cook’s family will make the difficult arrangements for memorial services. The van is being held as part of the investigation, and the troopers expect to release more details about the crash once final tests are complete.

In the end, the loss of David S. Cook serves as a stark and unexpected reminder of how fleeting life can be—and how even a well-traveled highway can conceal a tragic turn.
