It’s with profound sadness that the Cape Coral community is mourning the loss of Alexandra “Alex” Ashby, a 37‑year-old biology teacher at Ida Baker High School, who died in a single‑vehicle crash early on Nov. 13. According to Cape Coral Police, her car left Pine Island Road just west of SW 19th Avenue and struck a large utility pole. She was the only occupant and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Principal Jami Covert of Ida Baker High School sent a heartfelt email to parents on Friday morning, telling families that the school is “deeply saddened by the death of one of our teachers.” The letter also noted that the Lee County School District’s Crisis Response Team is on campus to offer support, and counselors are available for any students or staff who are struggling.

District records confirm that Ashby taught biology at the school, where she was widely respected and loved. Her presence in the classroom went beyond just teaching science — she inspired many students, built relationships grounded in kindness, and was known for caring deeply about young people’s growth.

Officials have stated that neither alcohol nor drugs played a role in the crash. While the investigation is still ongoing, authorities emphasize that this appears to be a tragic accident rather than anything criminal or reckless.

Even as the school works through shock and grief, community members are already sharing how much she meant to them. A grandparent of a 10th grader at Ida Baker told Gulf Coast News she was “shocked … you hear about accidents every day, but now it hits home because it’s a school.” That raw, heartbreaking sentiment echoes in the halls, in classrooms, and in the hearts of her students.

Social media has also reflected the depth of the loss. Her husband reportedly posted on Instagram confirming the identity of his wife and expressing devastating grief — people describe her as not only a brilliant teacher but a devoted mother and partner.

As Ida Baker High and the broader Cape Coral community come to terms with this sudden and heartbreaking loss, they are honoring Ashby’s memory by coming together. The grief‑support flyer shared by the school, the open lines for counseling, and the heartfelt stories being told all reflect just how deeply she touched the lives around her. Her legacy — of compassion, dedication, and connection — will live on in the students she taught and the community she so dearly loved.
