A tight-knit Evansville community is reeling after a heartbreaking crash on Sunday afternoon claimed the life of a 14‑year-old boy identified as Alexander Hessler, a student at Reitz High School. According to the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office, the accident happened around 2:28 p.m. in the 1900 block of Orchard Road, when a speeding vehicle crested a hill, went airborne for about 50 feet, smashed into a tree, and came to rest on the road.

Five young people were inside the car at the time. Tragically, Alexander was ejected through the rear passenger window. First responders rushed him to Deaconess Midtown Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The driver and the other three passengers all suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Law enforcement investigators say speed appears to be a significant factor in the crash. Deputies trained in accident reconstruction responded, and the vehicle has been taken to the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Forensics Garage for further analysis. Officials also plan to download data from the car’s event data recorder. A blood sample was collected from the teenage driver, though authorities do not currently suspect drugs or alcohol played a role.

On Monday, the Vanderburgh County Coroner’s Office confirmed the identity of the young victim as Alexander Hessler. The Evansville‑Vanderburgh School Corporation (EVSC) released a statement expressing deep sorrow, noting that Alexander was part of the Reitz High School community. “We are heartbroken by the loss of one of our students,” the district said, extending condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew him.

The crash remains under active investigation. Authorities say they’ve secured a search warrant to obtain data from the vehicle’s black box, and reconstruction experts continue to piece together what happened in those critical seconds.

As this tight-knit Evansville neighborhood mourns, questions linger: Why was the car traveling so fast? What led up to the crash? And how do the other young lives involved recover from a moment none of them could have foreseen?

For now, the community’s focus is on grieving and supporting one another—especially Alexander’s family, and his friends at Reitz High, whose lives have been forever changed in a single, devastating afternoon.
