Birmingham City Football Club is planning a major upgrade with a brand new stadium. The planned stadium, boasting a capacity of 62,000, is part of a large project to redevelop a section of the city.

The club shared its vision for the stadium in Bordesley Green. The design includes twelve chimney-like structures around the stadium, a roof that can open and close, and a field that can be moved. The stadium aims to be a versatile venue, hosting a variety of events in addition to soccer games.

Club chairman Tom Wagner believes the stadium will be a landmark, visible from miles away, symbolizing Birmingham’s dedication to excellence.

The design incorporates elements that pay tribute to the area’s history. The chimneys, for example, are a nod to a former brick factory that once stood on the site, while also serving a practical purpose by supporting the roof’s structure. The plans include features like a tower with an elevator leading to a bar that offers views of the city.

The stadium is designed with fans in mind. The “steep bowl” shape aims to create an exciting atmosphere during games. The surrounding area will include markets, cafes, restaurants, and play areas, providing a range of options for visitors.

Experts say that the club will need to work on ensuring the stadium is well-utilized, with consistent attendance for both sporting events and other functions.

According to Dr. Tom Bason, a sport and event management professor at Coventry University, booking big concerts will fill the stadium easily. However, he added that the club would have to weigh the possibility of not playing football to a full capacity every week.

The club hopes to have the new stadium ready for the 2030/2031 football season. Some fans believe the team can fill the large stadium. The fans showed great support when 50,000 fans went to Wembley last year.
