PRESTON, Connecticut — After nearly a month of intense searching, the body of 72-year-old Henry “Pops” Hood was found on Saturday, November 22, in a densely wooded area near Linda Court and Ross Road. Hood had been missing since October 24, prompting a large community-led search effort supported by the Connecticut State Police.

    What Happened

Henry Hood was reported missing after he left his Preston home through a basement window between 4:30 and 5:00 p.m. on October 24. At the time, authorities said he may have been wearing blue pajamas, but noted he could have changed clothes before leaving.
Hood, who lived with dementia and had a history of wandering, triggered a statewide Purple Alert — Connecticut’s notification system for missing older adults with cognitive impairments.

For nearly four weeks, family members, residents, and volunteer groups, including Exploring with a Mission, searched the rugged terrain surrounding his home. Volunteers were urged to check sheds, vehicles, and wooded areas and to wear blaze orange due to hunting season.

On Saturday around 1:00 p.m., volunteer searchers discovered Hood’s body in heavy brush. The Connecticut State Police confirmed the identification through the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. The cause of death remains undetermined as the investigation continues.

    Who Was Henry “Pops” Hood

Henry Hood was a U.S. Navy veteran who originally grew up in Washington state. He spent more than 50 years living in Preston with his wife, raising four children and building a life centered on service, humility, and family.

Before dementia forced him to retire, Hood repaired home computers and was known in his community for his kindness, patience, and willingness to help others. Friends and family describe him as gentle, humorous, and deeply devoted to the people he loved.

    Life, Legacy, and Unanswered Questions

The discovery of Hood’s body brings both closure and heartbreak to his family. Questions remain about what happened after he left home and how he ended up in the wooded area where he was found. State police say the investigation remains active.

His life, however, leaves behind a lasting imprint:

    • A veteran who served with honor

    • A devoted husband of more than five decades

    • A loving father and grandfather

    • A neighbor known for generosity and calmness

    Community Impact and Response

Hood’s disappearance united the Preston community in a remarkable display of compassion and collective effort. Neighbors and strangers volunteered side-by-side with search teams, hoping to bring him home safely.

For many families caring for loved ones with dementia, this tragedy highlights the dangers of wandering, the emotional burden of caregiving, and the urgent need for strong support systems and safety measures.

Local residents have expressed deep sympathy for Hood’s family, noting that his story reflects both the vulnerability of older adults and the power of community support.

    What Happens Next

Authorities continue to investigate Hood’s death to determine an official cause. The family is expected to release details on memorial arrangements once ready.
Officials also encourage families who care for individuals with dementia to explore preventative safety tools such as wearable trackers, home alerts, and immediate reporting if a loved one wanders.

This story may be updated with more information as it becomes available.
