An Iowa man will spend the rest of his life in prison for a terrible crime he committed last year. Hamza Smajlovic shot his ex-girlfriend’s mother and hurt her father.
The sentence was given on Friday, November 21st, after Smajlovic admitted he was guilty of murder and attempted murder.
Prosecutors said that back in October 2024, Smajlovic choked his girlfriend, Jasmyn Robison, at their home. She decided to break up with him because of this.
Jasmyn said that this was the “final straw” after nine years of a bad relationship.
On November 1, 2024, Jasmyn’s parents, Tony and Ruth Robison, came to help her move out. That’s when Smajlovic shot them.
Ruth died, and Tony was badly hurt.
Smajlovic told the judge that he shot Ruth in the head with a gun. He also said he shot Tony in the head.
Jasmyn spoke at the hearing where Smajlovic was sentenced.
She said she wished she had never met him and that she would never get back the time she lost with her mother.
Jasmyn’s sister, Chayse Robison, also spoke.
She said that her mother’s memory is stronger than the man who killed her. She added that his actions will bring shame to him and his family, but her mother’s legacy will be one of honor because she gave her life to protect Jasmyn without hesitation.
