Tullahoma, Tenn. — Grandfather and 3-Month-Old Granddaughter Dead After Pit-Bull Attack in Coffee County

A quiet mid-afternoon in Tullahoma, Tennessee turned into a scene of horror Wednesday, when a brutal dog mauling left a 50-year-old man and his 3-month-old granddaughter dead. According to local authorities, the victims — identified as James Smith and his infant granddaughter — were found fatally attacked by multiple pit bulls in the front yard of a home on East Warren Street.

Officers with the Tullahoma Police Department and first responders rushed to the 900-block of East Warren Street at around 3:00 p.m. following a distressing call. When they arrived, they confronted a grisly scene: pit bulls actively mauling the baby. To halt the attack, officers shot and killed the dogs.

Once the animals were neutralized, authorities confirmed the unthinkable — both victims had succumbed to their injuries. The district attorney for Tennessee’s 14th Judicial District called it “an especially difficult and brutal scene,” pleading for thoughts and prayers for the family and first responders, who were deeply shaken and traumatized.

Neighbors described a surreal calm shattered by screams. One resident, who asked to remain anonymous, recounted arriving home around 2:30 p.m. — moments before the emergency — and hearing a woman’s frantic cries in the street. He said he tried to help her but she ran off. Soon, sirens rang out and he realized the gravity of the situation. “We had no idea that anything like this would ever happen here,” he told reporters.

Community members are now reeling, their disbelief tinged with sorrow. In a neighborhood usually known for its calm, the idea that a grandfather and his baby granddaughter — innocents — could suffer such devastating violence has left many shaken to their core. As one neighbor put it, “It’s just horrible … knowing the people, knowing this happened across the street.”

As of now, the investigation is underway. Authorities are working to determine how the dogs gained access, whether they had been contained or supervised, and whether there was any known history of aggression. Meanwhile, the remaining dogs at the home have been taken into custody by animal control.

For many in Coffee County, the questions are now more than procedural — they’re moral. How could this happen? Did someone see warning signs? And most painful of all — how could two lives, one so young, be lost so senselessly? As the community mourns, they are also demanding accountability, answers, and justice for a family forever changed.
