MUSKEGON, Mich. — A quiet Saturday afternoon in Muskegon turned tragic when gunfire erupted inside a home near the corner of Jackson Avenue and McLaren Street, leaving two people dead, three critically wounded — and a community again grappling with grief.

At about 3:15 p.m., officers responded to reports of shots fired. On arrival, they discovered multiple individuals who had been shot. Among them was 25‑year‑old Joshua “Josh” Fondren Jr., who was pronounced dead at the scene. The 22‑year-old woman wounded in the attack — later identified as Cori May — was rushed to a hospital but succumbed to her injuries.

Two 25‑year-old men, also shot, remain hospitalized in critical condition. A 4‑year-old child who was struck sustained only minor injuries and is expected to be released soon.

Friends and grieving loved ones described Josh as a young father — his eight‑month‑old child and another baby on the way. As one relative put it: his baby “will never get to see his daddy.”

Authorities say the suspected shooter fled the scene, and no arrests have been made. Investigators believe the incident was not random, though they have not publicly described a motive. The department stressed there is no current threat to public safety.

The tragedy comes on the heels of another violent death in the city just days earlier — a killing at a home on Jiroch Street. In a heartfelt statement, Muskegon’s mayor called on residents to unite, support survivors, and provide any tips that might help authorities.

For now, police are urging anyone with information to contact the Muskegon Police at (231) 724‑6750 or to reach out to Silent Observer at (231) 722‑7463. The community waits, watching, praying, hoping for answers — and justice.
