Child Custody Meetup Turns into Gunfight at Mint Hill Edible Arrangements

It was supposed to be a routine hand-off, the kind of Friday morning scene families go through every day across North Carolina. But at the Edible Arrangements shop in a busy Mint Hill shopping center, things took a terrifying turn that no one saw coming. Two local police officers, who were just there to make sure a child custody exchange went smoothly, ended up in the fight of their lives after a suspect identified over police scanners as David Caldwell allegedly opened fire.

The quiet of the morning was shattered just before 11 a.m. when the situation at the Matthews-Mint Hill Road storefront escalated in an instant. Witnesses and early reports suggest that as the exchange was taking place, Caldwell pulled out a gun and started shooting. The officers, caught in the line of fire, managed to shoot back, resulting in a chaotic scene that left both officers bleeding and the suspect dead at the scene.

For a few tense hours, the Mint Hill community held its breath. Initial word from the department was grim, listing both officers in critical condition as they were rushed into emergency surgery. However, the latest updates bring a bit of relief: both officers have since been stabilized. A neighbor nearby mentioned that seeing them loaded onto gurneys without the need for immediate CPR was the first small sign of hope in a very dark morning.

State leaders were quick to react to the heartbreak, especially because of the sensitive nature of the call. Senator Woodson Bradley, who has been open about her own journey as a domestic violence survivor, pointed out how these hand-offs are often the most dangerous moments for families dealing with a history of abuse. She shared her prayers for the officers and the mother involved, noting that no one should have to face this kind of violence while just trying to care for their kids.

The Edible Arrangements corporate office also stepped in to clear the air, expressing their shock over the incident. They clarified that the shooting didn’t involve the store’s staff or the business itself, but rather the sidewalk and parking area where the families had agreed to meet. They’ve been working closely with the local franchise owner to support the community while the investigation moves forward.

Now, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) has taken the lead, which is standard when officers are forced to use their weapons. They are combing through the shopping center, looking at every piece of evidence to piece together exactly how a simple custody swap turned into a deadly shootout. It’s a somber reminder of the risks officers take, even on calls that seem straightforward.

As the yellow police tape eventually comes down, the focus remains on the two officers recovering in the hospital. The people of Mint Hill are known for looking out for one another, and right now, all eyes are on the recovery of the men who were just trying to keep a family safe. For now, the investigation continues into the life of David Caldwell and what led to such a violent explosion of gunfire on a Friday morning.
