Chattanooga is grieving the unexpected loss of Dr. Dugald McMillan, a devoted endodontist whose gentle care and deep commitment to patients left a lasting mark on the community. Dr. McMillan’s passing came as a profound shock to family, colleagues, and the many people whose fear of dental treatment he helped ease.

Born and raised in the tiny town of Woodland, Alabama, McMillan grew up inspired by his father’s work in dentistry. That early passion led him to the University of Montevallo, where he earned a Bachelor of Science, and then to the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Dentistry, where he completed his Doctor of Dental Medicine degree in 2009.

In the first years of his career, McMillan practiced general dentistry in New Hope, Alabama, a rural area hungry for quality care. Over time he found himself drawn to endodontics — the highly specialized field focused on the soft tissues inside the tooth and the often misunderstood root canal treatment. That drive pushed him back to UAB for advanced specialty training, where he excelled and finished with a Certificate in Endodontics in 2021, even serving as chief resident during his final year.

Friends, coworkers, and patients often said that McMillan’s greatest talent wasn’t just his technical skill but his way with people. He believed in taking the least invasive approach possible, walking each person through their treatment plan with patience and clarity so they never felt alone in the chair. Many recalled that he could calm even the most anxious of patients by listening with genuine care and smiling with warmth.

In his practice, Chattanooga Endodontics, McMillan brought together the best of modern technology and a personal touch. He invested in precision Zeiss microscopes that helped him see what others might miss and chose comfortable equipment like massaging dental chairs to soothe nervous visitors. To him, every detail mattered because behind every procedure was a human being — someone who deserved respect and reassurance.

Outside the office, McMillan’s life was filled with love and laughter. He was a devoted husband to his wife, Natalie, and a proud father to their daughters, Kate and Julia. He loved the outdoors — from mountain biking up rugged trails to the simple joy of water sport weekends — and carried that same sense of adventure and presence into every part of his life.

The news of his passing has left a quiet sadness across Chattanooga and beyond. His colleagues in the dental community remember him as a leader who was always eager to learn and always eager to teach, someone who lifted others up simply by being who he was. Patients recall more than skill — they remember compassion in moments that often feel vulnerable.

A private celebration of his life will be held with close family and friends, and many in the community have been encouraged to honor McMillan’s legacy by supporting local dental outreach and community care programs — causes that reflected his lifelong mission of service and kindness. His absence is deeply felt, but the lives he touched will carry forward the genuine care he offered every day.
