A Disappearance With Few Answers
Nancy was last seen on Jan. 31. By Feb. 1, her family reported her missing.
Investigators believe she may have been taken overnight. Surveillance footage appears to show a masked individual at her front door, and authorities say ransom notes were sent to local media outlets.
Despite the early urgency, there have been no confirmed sightings and no suspect identified. Weeks later, the case remains unresolved.
Officials have warned that while Nancy may have been targeted, the broader public cannot assume they are not at risk.
A Family’s Public Plea
Nancy’s daughter, Savannah Guthrie, has turned to the public for help.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation initially offered a $100,000 reward for information. The family later increased that to $1 million and contributed $500,000 to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children.

As the investigation continues, scrutiny has turned toward Chris Nanos, the Pima County sheriff leading the effort.
Critics have questioned how the case has been handled, and a formal recall effort was launched on March 12. Among those backing it is Daniel Butierez, who cited the situation as a tipping point.
Nanos has acknowledged the recall, describing it as part of the democratic process, while continuing to speak publicly about the investigation.
Broader Questions Emerge
The pressure doesn’t stop with the missing persons case.
Recent reports have raised questions about Nanos’ past, including discrepancies in how his departure from the El Paso Police Department in 1982 was described. His office has said the inconsistencies were administrative, not intentional.
Separately, the sheriff’s department is facing a $1.35 million lawsuit over alleged COVID-19 safety failures in the county jail—an unrelated issue that nonetheless adds to the current scrutiny.
