Two people have died after a small aircraft crashed in a field near Ongar in Essex while taking part in a flight experience, according to police.

The incident happened shortly before 12:30pm on Tuesday when the two-seater Cessna aircraft went down near Mill Lane in Ongar after taking off from North Weald airfield, about seven miles away.

    Flight Experience Ends in Tragedy

Police confirmed that the aircraft was carrying out a short introductory flight when it failed to return.

The plane was part of a scheduled flight experience, but authorities say it came down in a field shortly after departure.

Members of the public reported the crash, prompting emergency services to respond to the scene.

    Police Confirm Ongoing Investigation

Detective Chief Superintendent Morgan Cronin of the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate said the aircraft had been expected to complete a short flight before returning to base.

He confirmed that formal identification of the victims has not yet taken place and said the process will take time due to the nature of the incident.

Authorities said the focus is now on establishing what happened and supporting the families of the deceased.

    Air Accidents Investigation Underway

The Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) has launched a formal investigation into the crash and sent inspectors to the site.

Police are working alongside the AAIB, fire services, the airfield operator, and Epping Forest District Council to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Investigators are also speaking to witnesses and reviewing any available footage from members of the public.

    Scene Remains Under Investigation

Authorities confirmed that officers will remain at the crash site in the coming days as forensic work continues.

Police have urged anyone with information, eyewitness accounts, or video footage to come forward and contact emergency services.

    Local Response and Tributes

Alex Burghart, MP for Brentwood and Ongar, described the incident as deeply tragic and extended condolences to the victims’ families. He also thanked emergency responders for their efforts.

The local church, St Mary’s in High Ongar, also acknowledged the incident, asking the community to pray for those affected, including emergency workers and residents.

    Background: Small Aircraft Flight Experiences

Flight experience trips are common introductory aviation activities where passengers fly in light aircraft such as Cessna planes under supervision. These flights are typically short and operate from local airfields.

In this case, the aircraft departed from North Weald airfield before crashing near Ongar shortly after takeoff.

    Conclusion

The crash near Ongar has left two people dead and triggered an ongoing multi-agency investigation led by Essex Police and the Air Accidents Investigation Branch. Authorities continue to work to establish the cause while supporting the families affected.
