Late on the night of Saturday, November 8, 2025, a routine ride turned tragic for 34-year-old Joseph M. Pepin of Hampton, N.H. Formerly from Westford, Massachusetts, Pepin set out on an e-scooter along the familiar stretch of Ashworth Avenue. By 12:54 a.m., a call to 911 signaled disaster—he was found unconscious, unresponsive, and ultimately pronounced dead by first responders.

According to a press release from the Hampton Police Department, Pepin was riding northbound on the sidewalk near the intersection of Ashworth Avenue and G Street when he lost control of his electric scooter. There were no other vehicles involved. Surveillance footage later revealed the loss of control leading directly to the crash.

Investigators noted that Pepin was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident—a factor that adds urgency to the department’s safety warnings. In their statement, Chief Alex Reno expressed deep sympathy: “This is a very unfortunate and tragic event. Our thoughts are with Mr. Pepin’s family and friends at this time.”

The department has asked anyone who may have witnessed the crash—or who has footage from home security cameras in the area around the time of the collision—to come forward. They’ve provided the contact number (603) 929-4444, and also accept anonymous tips through the local Crimeline at (603) 929-1222.

This is already the second fatality this year in Hampton involving a motorized scooter or bike, prompting a renewed emphasis from local authorities on safety equipment, visibility, and responsible riding at night. Reflective gear, lighting, and helmets are being strongly advised.

For those who knew him, Joseph Pepin remains remembered as a kind soul and a friend whose life ended far too soon. His tragic last ride serves as a sobering reminder that even widely used and seemingly safe modes of transport carry risk, especially at night and without proper protection. His memory is left in the hearts of family, friends, and the Hampton community.
