Two Lives Lost on U.S. 178: Saluda County Reels After Deadly Crash

When the early-morning calm of Monday in Saluda County, S.C., gave way to sirens and tragedy, the community was left reeling. A routine drive turned into a catastrophe that claimed two lives and forever changed at least two families.

It all began just after 11 a.m. on Oct. 27 along U.S. Highway 178, near Prater Road: a 2005 Honda Accord, traveling west, was said to be evading law enforcement when it crossed the centerline and slammed into a 2022 Chevrolet Traverse headed east.

Inside the Traverse sat 76-year-old Shirley Fincher of Saluda. She was riding as a passenger when the collision violently ended her life—she was pronounced dead at the scene.

In the Honda was 35-year-old Rakeem West of Batesburg, the driver, along with a passenger. West was seriously injured and later pronounced dead Wednesday morning at Prisma Health Richland, according to the coroner’s office.

Authorities say both vehicles had a driver and a passenger aboard. The Concord of events: the Honda’s driver attempted to evade capture, crossed over, and struck the oncoming SUV head-on.

While investigations by the South Carolina Highway Patrol and the county coroner continue, the human cost is already being felt. Families and friends remember Fincher as a warm-hearted longtime Saluda resident beloved by those around her. And West, remembered by those close to him as a dedicated father and friend, leaves a void that cannot be filled.

In the quiet homes of mourning, the question of “what if” echoes loudest. The crash, the pursuit, the life lost—all converge into a painful reminder: on the road, seconds can define a lifetime. The two families now navigate grief that no measure of time could ever ease.

As the community gathers, the message is simple: life is fragile, and tomorrow is never promised. In memory of Shirley Fincher and Rakeem West—gone far too soon, forever remembered.
