Master Deputy Tamara Tuitt-Bartlett of Gwinnett County was tragically killed on Saturday night after a domestic dispute escalated into gun violence. Her son, who was injured during the incident, managed to seek help from a neighbor, leading authorities to discover her death in the Villages at Shakerag subdivision.

    What Happened

At around 8 p.m. on Saturday, a 17-year-old boy arrived at a neighbor’s house in Forsyth County, bleeding from gunshot wounds. He told the neighbor that his mother, Master Deputy Tamara Tuitt-Bartlett, had been shot after an argument with her boyfriend, 43-year-old Eric Sumner. The neighbor immediately called 911, and emergency personnel responded to find the boy, who was then transported to the hospital in stable condition.

Following the 911 call, deputies arrived at Tuitt-Bartlett’s residence and discovered her body in an upstairs bedroom. The circumstances of her death were deemed a result of domestic violence.

    Investigation and Arrest

The suspect, Eric Sumner of Suwanee, was tracked down by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office on I-75 after a brief pursuit and was arrested. He faces charges of murder and aggravated assault with intent to murder.

The case is particularly poignant as it is not the first tragedy to strike the family. In 2021, Tuitt-Bartlett’s older son was killed in a hit-and-run accident in Johns Creek, and the driver was never identified.

    A Legacy of Service

Master Deputy Tuitt-Bartlett had served with the Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office for nearly two decades. The department praised her unwavering dedication and compassion. “Her commitment to protecting and serving made a lasting impact on all who had the honor of knowing and working alongside her,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.

Neighbors have shared fond memories of Tuitt-Bartlett, describing her as a kind and engaged member of the community, always willing to listen and help improve the neighborhood.
