England secured their place in the World Cup round of 16 after a 2-1 comeback victory over DR Congo, with captain Harry Kane scoring twice in the final stages of the match.

The result sees England advance from the knockout round after recovering from an early setback in a match played in Atlanta Stadium.

    Early Shock for England

DR Congo took an early lead just seven minutes into the game when Brian Cipenga found the net past England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

Despite sustained pressure from England, the African side held firm for much of the first half, with goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi producing a series of key saves.

    Kane Turns the Game Around

England found their breakthrough in the 75th minute when Kane equalised before striking again 11 minutes later to complete his brace and secure victory.

Speaking after the match, Kane described the encounter as a “crazy game” and said he embraced his role in deciding the outcome.

    Tactical Changes Shift Momentum

England manager Thomas Tuchel made three changes to the starting lineup, including bringing in Djed Spence, Declan Rice and Noni Madueke.

Late substitutions proved decisive, with Bukayo Saka and Anthony Gordon coming off the bench to influence the game. Gordon was credited with assisting both of Kane’s goals.

    Atmosphere and Fan Celebration

The match took place in high temperatures, with England supporters arriving early at the stadium despite the heat.

Following the win, players and fans celebrated together, singing Oasis’s Wonderwall inside Atlanta Stadium.

    DR Congo’s Effort Falls Short

DR Congo, ranked lower than England in the FIFA standings, entered the match after finishing third in their group behind Colombia and Portugal.

Despite their underdog status, they pushed England hard for most of the match and briefly looked set for an upset before England’s late turnaround.

    What Comes Next for England

England will now face Mexico in the round of 16, a side ranked ninth in the world and enjoying strong form in the tournament.

Mexico enter the match after a comfortable 2-0 win over Ecuador and will also benefit from playing at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City.

The team has yet to reach a World Cup semi-final but arrives unbeaten in their recent matches and without conceding a goal in four straight games.

If England progress, they will meet either Norway or Brazil in the quarter-finals.

    Conclusion

England’s late comeback, powered by Kane’s decisive finishing and key substitutions, ensured progression to the last 16. However, a tougher challenge now awaits against in-form hosts Mexico.
