Jana Byron Houston TX Death and Obituary – The legal and maritime communities are mourning the sudden loss of Jana Byron, a highly respected attorney and industry leader, who passed away in Houston, Texas. Jana, most recently a key figure at Lockton Companies, was widely admired for her sharp legal mind, professional integrity, and dedication to advancing maritime law and insurance. Her passing represents a significant loss to colleagues, clients, and the broader international shipping and insurance sectors.

With more than 24 years of experience in Protection and Indemnity (P&I) law, Jana built a career defined by excellence, advocacy, and mentorship. She began practicing in 1999 in New York City, where she specialized in representing P&I Clubs and handling complex maritime claims. Her ability to navigate intricate legal matters quickly established her as a trusted attorney in one of the most specialized areas of law.

Her career included pivotal roles at two of the most prominent International Group P&I Clubs. At the American Steamship Owners Mutual Protection and Indemnity Association, Inc., she advanced through positions as Senior Claims Executive, Claims Manager, and Counsel. She later served as a Senior Claims Executive with the United Kingdom Mutual Steam Ship Assurance Association, where she earned recognition for her expertise in high-stakes, cross-border disputes. These positions highlighted her ability to balance client advocacy with practical, results-oriented strategies—an approach that earned her respect across the global maritime industry.

In her most recent role at Lockton Companies, Jana was entrusted with critical responsibilities, including client servicing, claims consulting, and coordination with global service and claims teams. Her colleagues remember her as a trusted advisor whose insights consistently brought clarity and resolution to challenging situations. She combined technical skill with empathy, providing steady guidance to clients while fostering collaboration within her team.

Beyond her professional accomplishments, Jana was deeply engaged in civic and industry leadership. She served as Chair of the Houston Marine & Energy Insurance Conference from 2019 to 2021, where her leadership helped guide important discussions on evolving industry challenges. She was also a board member of the Houston Mariners Club, a dedicated member of the Maritime Law Association of the United States, and actively involved with the Women’s International Shipping & Trading Association (WISTA). Through these roles, Jana championed professional development and the advancement of women in maritime law and insurance.

Her academic achievements further underscored her commitment to excellence. Jana earned her B.A. in history and political science from Barnard College, Columbia University, before completing her J.D. at the University of Connecticut School of Law. She was admitted to practice in New York and Connecticut, as well as the Federal Courts for the Southern District of New York and the District of Connecticut.

Friends, colleagues, and clients alike recall Jana not only as an exceptional lawyer but also as a mentor, leader, and advocate whose generosity of spirit matched her professional brilliance. She inspired others through her dedication, kindness, and willingness to support the next generation of maritime professionals.

Her passing leaves a void in the maritime and insurance industries that will be felt for years to come. Jana Byron’s legacy—marked by integrity, leadership, and unwavering commitment to her field—will continue to inspire those who had the privilege of working alongside her.
