It was meant to be a day of celebration for 24-year-old Parker Charles Johnson of Hibbing. His birthday fell on November 1, and by all accounts he was welcomed into his 24th year by friends and family who knew the kindhearted young man he was. Instead, during the early hours of November 2, he was fatally shot in a parking lot outside the Meadowview Apartments in Hibbing, leaving a community stunned and heartbroken.

Police responded around 2:16 a.m. to reports of gunfire in the parking lot at 3535 ninth Avenue West, where the Meadowview Apartments stand. When officers arrived, they found Parker suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to the chest; despite immediate efforts by medical personnel and first responders, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The investigation is now underway, led by the Hibbing Police Department in conjunction with the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA). Authorities believe the shooting to be an isolated incident, and that the public is not in further danger. According to the latest updates, a suspect was arrested without incident around 12:30 p.m. Sunday and is currently in custody at the St. Louis County Jail pending review by the county attorney’s office.

In the hours that followed, community members and family were left grappling with grief and disbelief. Parker’s birthday celebrations earlier in the day now stand in stark contrast to a tragic ending none of them could have imagined. Friends described him as a young man full of promise—a shining presence whose life was just beginning to unfold. He had hopes, dreams, relationships, and a future that seemed open and inviting.

At the scene, law-enforcement investigators were visible in force: the parking lot cordoned off with tape, evidence markers scattered near a Dodge Ram pickup truck, and teams gathering statements from witnesses and reviewing surveillance footage. Officials say they are asking anyone with information, or who may have captured relevant surveillance footage, to contact the Hibbing Police Department or dial 911.

While the motive has not been released publicly, the arrest does signal a significant step in the investigation. Police emphasize their belief in no ongoing public threat—but for Parker’s family, friends and the broader Hibbing community, the shock remains. Losing someone just hours into their birthday is a sorrow hard to bear.

As the community mourns, the story of Parker Johnson is being remembered not only for the tragedy, but for the young man he was: full of kindness, growth and bright possibility. His loss is felt deeply across Hibbing, a reminder of how fragile life can be, and how a moment can forever change – for one family, and for an entire neighborhood coming together in grief.
