In a heartbreaking turn of events Saturday evening, 58‑year‑old Beatrice Wilson Gallman of Newberry lost her life after a collision between her moped and another vehicle along a busy stretch of highway. The collision occurred on October 26 in the area of U.S. Highway 76 near Colony Church Road, in the Prosperity area of Newberry County, according to officials.

According to the Newberry County Coroner’s Office, Coroner Laura G. Kneece said crews were dispatched soon after the incident. Despite the rapid response, Gallman was pronounced dead at the scene. The crash is under investigation by the Coroner’s Office and the South Carolina Highway Patrol (SCHP).

Early investigative findings indicate the moped was traveling eastbound on U.S. Highway 76 (or U.S. 276 according to some reports) when it was struck from behind by a 2010 Honda sedan. The driver of the Honda was reportedly uninjured and remained at the scene, cooperating with authorities. Investigators are examining factors such as visibility, traffic volume, speed and road conditions at the time of the crash. The area is known for heavy traffic and a high mix of vehicle types, which locals say can increase risk for smaller vehicles like mopeds.

Gallman’s death has cast a somber mood over the Newberry and Prosperity communities. In the aftermath, friends and neighbours remembered her as a warm, hardworking woman who always greeted others with a smile. Community posts on social media and floral tributes at the crash site reflect the deep affection many had for her. Though formal obituary details remain private, the sense of communal loss is clear.

Officials urge both motorists and moped riders to use caution—especially during evening travel on busy roads. They emphasize wearing protective gear, ensuring visibility (lights and reflectors), avoiding distractions and being mindful of high‑speed traffic conditions. Coroner Kneece expressed her condolences to Gallman’s family and thanked emergency responders for their efforts.

As the investigation continues, the Coroner’s Office has scheduled an autopsy later this week to determine the precise cause and manner of death. Authorities ask anyone who witnessed the collision or has information to contact the South Carolina Highway Patrol to help clarify how the events unfolded.

In loss, the incident serves as a reminder of how quickly a routine ride can end in tragedy—especially on roads not always designed with vulnerable road users in mind. For Gallman’s family, friends and the broader community, the hope now is that her passing will prompt greater awareness and perhaps one less avoidable loss in the future.
